Must Busiest Holiday【Golden Week】

Golden Week🚁🚁

We are currently in the middle of Golden Week! Golden Week refers to a string of holidays within seven days, and is one of the busiest holiday seasons in Japan. There are four national holidays making up the Golden Week every year. This year, we have an unprecedented 10-day holiday (April 27th to May 6th) due to the ascension of the new Emperor on May 1st, which will be a public holiday. As law stipulates that days sandwiched between national holidays also become holidays, April 30th and May 2nd will naturally become public holidays.

Showa Day, April 29th (昭和の日 shouwa-no-hi)
The birthday of the former Emperor Showa, who reigned from 1926 to his death in 1989.

Abdication of the current Emperor, April 30th (2019 only)
The current Emperor will formally abdicate his position on April 30th, marking the end of three decades of the Heisei era.

Coronation of the new Emperor, May 1st (2019 only)
The Crown Prince will ascend on May 1st, marking the beginning of the Reiwa era.

Constitution Day, May 3rd (憲法記念日 kenpou kinenbi)
Honors the ratification of the Peace Constitution in 1947.

Greenery Day, May 4th (みどりの日midori-no-hi)
Originally celebrated on April 29th (the former Emperor Showa's birthday), but moved to May 4th in 2007. A holiday dedicated to the environment and nature as Emperor Showa loved nature, flowers, and plants.

Children’s Day, May 5th (こどもの日kodomo-no-hi)
A festival celebrating the happiness of children. Many families commonly hang carp streamers (koinobori) outdoors to pray for the health and future success of their sons.
